Clip-in Hair Extensions: The Complete Buying and Styling Guide
Clip-in hair extensions are wefts of hair with small snap clips sewn along the top. You clip them close to the root under your own hair to add instant length and volume, then take them out at the end of the day. No salon, no glue and no commitment.
They are the most flexible type of temporary extension, because you decide exactly where each piece goes. Use a full set for long, full hair, or just two or three pieces for extra volume at the back. Here is how to choose the right set and wear it so nobody can tell.
Full Head, Half Head and One Piece Clip-ins
Full Head Clip-in Sets
A full head set usually has 7 to 10 wefts in different widths: wide pieces for the back, medium pieces for the middle and small pieces for the sides. This is the best choice if you want a big change in length.
Half Head Sets
Four or five pieces that add volume and some length without the weight of a full set. Good for medium to fine hair, or for adding fullness to hair that is already long.
One Piece Clip-ins
A single wide weft with five or more clips that covers the back of the head. It goes on in about a minute and is perfect for quick volume, everyday wear or travel.
Seamless PU or Lace Weft Clip-ins?
Traditional clip-ins have a lace or fabric weft, which is soft, flexible and gives lots of volume. Seamless clip-in extensions use a thin PU strip that lies completely flat against the head. Seamless wefts are harder to see in fine or straight hair and feel lighter in hot weather, while lace wefts are thicker and give more body. If your hair is fine or you often wear it sleek, choose seamless.
Clip-in Human Hair Extensions vs Synthetic Clip-ins
Clip-in human hair extensions can be washed, curled and straightened just like your own hair. Raw and Remy hair keep the cuticles in one direction, so the hair stays smooth, tangles less and lasts longer. They are the best choice for regular wear. Explore more human hair extensions.
Synthetic clip-ins are lighter and more affordable, and they hold their wave or curl pattern without styling. They are ideal for special occasions, for trying a new length or colour, or for adding colourful highlight streaks.
How Many Grams Do You Need?
Weight tells you how much hair is in a set. As a guide:
- 100 to 120 grams: fine or thin hair, or a natural boost of volume.
- 140 to 160 grams: medium hair and a clear change in length.
- 180 grams and more: thick hair, very long lengths or a full glamorous look.
If your hair is thick and you want extra length, two sets in the same shade blend better than one very heavy set. For very fine hair, see our extensions for thin hair.
Straight, Wavy and Curly Clip-ins
Choose the texture you wear most often. Silky straight suits sleek, blow dried styles. Body wave and water wave give soft movement and hide wefts easily, which makes them very beginner friendly. Deep wave, kinky curly and afro kinky clip-ins are made to blend with natural curls and coils. You can find every curl pattern in our curly and wavy hair extensions collection.
How to Put In Clip-in Hair Extensions
- Brush your hair and part it horizontally at the nape, about two fingers above the hairline. Clip the rest of your hair up.
- Lightly tease or spray the root along the parting so the clips grip well.
- Open the clips on the widest weft, place it just under the parting and snap the clips closed, starting in the middle.
- Let down a new section about two fingers higher and repeat with the next weft.
- Place the smaller pieces above the ears at the sides, keeping them below your natural parting.
- Let your hair down, brush it all together and style as one.
The first time may take fifteen minutes. After a few tries it takes five to ten.
How to Hide the Clips and Get a Natural Blend
- Never place a weft too close to your parting. Leave at least an inch of your own hair on top.
- Use shorter pieces near the face so the layers look natural.
- Curl or wave your own hair and the extensions together to blend any difference in thickness.
- If your ends are much thinner than the extensions, ask your stylist for light face framing layers in your own hair.
Washing and Storing Clip-ins
Wash human hair clip-ins every 10 to 15 wears, or when they feel heavy with product. Detangle first, wash in cool water with a sulphate free shampoo, apply conditioner from the middle to the ends, and let them air dry flat. Keep the clips closed while washing so they keep their shape. Store the wefts flat in their box or on a hanger, never in a tangled pile.
Common Clip-in Mistakes to Avoid
- Clipping too close to the parting. The wefts show when your hair moves.
- Using too little hair under a clip. The clip slips and pulls. Take a section at least as thick as a pencil.
- Placing every weft in a straight line. Follow the curve of your head, slightly lower at the sides.
- Brushing from the roots down. Start at the ends to avoid stress on the wefts.
- Leaving clips open when storing. Close them so they keep their spring.
Wearing Clip-ins Under a Hijab
Clip-ins are a popular way to add shape and volume at the back of the head under a hijab or shayla. Place two or three wefts at the nape and middle of the head, then tie your hair and the extensions into a low bun or ponytail. A lighter set lets the scarf sit smoothly and comfortably for many hours.

Clip-in Hair Extensions FAQs
Can clip-in extensions be worn on short hair?
Yes, if your hair is at least chin length so it can cover the clips. Choose a length that is not too much longer than your own hair and add layers for a smooth blend.
Do clip-ins hurt or cause headaches?
They should not. If a clip pulls, it is usually placed on too small a section or too close to the scalp. Move it slightly lower and use a little more hair under each clip.
Can I swim or go to the gym with clip-ins?
It is better to remove them. Chlorine, salt water and sweat can dry the hair and loosen the clips.
Can I colour clip-in human hair extensions?
A professional can tone human hair darker. Bleaching is not recommended, because it weakens the hair and shortens its life.
Why do my clip-ins tangle at the nape?
Friction from collars and scarves causes tangles at the back. Brush the bottom layer more often and use a light leave in conditioner.
Can I wear clip-ins in a ponytail or updo?
Yes. Place the wefts slightly higher and closer to the centre of the head so they stay hidden when your hair is tied up.
